Useful software downloads

We recommend and use a variety of software in the cl
ub.  The programs we find most useful are listed below:

ChessBase 2007 Light
A brilliant tool for beginner and expert alike.  Download and you'll be able to play through literally thousands of grandmaster games.

Chess Position Trainer
Another great free tool.  Excellent for learning opening repetoires, we also use it for annotating and playing through lectures in the club.

BabasChess
An excellent free chess client for Free Internet Chess Server (FICS).  Download, and start to play online with players of all abilities, or just observe some experts at play.  Get an account (it's free), and you'll be able to get a rating of your own and also observe online lectures.

Nagaskaki
This is a basic but small, quick and powerful free chess program.    Has the ability to set the playing strength to one of several levels, from easy to very hard.  Much stronger than most dedicated chess consoles.

Shredder
Unfortunately you have to pay for this one.  The nice thing about this software is that it autoatically adapts to your playing strength - if you beat it it gets stronger next time!.  Good from beginner to grandmaster.  The version for an iTouch is very highly recommended (you will need such a device and will need to download this from iTunes).

Other very good programmes for children include "Fritz and Chesster" (younger players), and "Fritz" or "Hiarcs" (strong players).  These and other commercial programmes can all be obtained from the online shop at  ChessBase.com.  Once again the version of Fritz for the iTouch is very highly recommended.

TheChessWebsite.com
Very useful link from where you can download short training video clips.  Do visit this site and make sure that you put some of the traps in your repetoire!
